My own fond memories of learning trace back to elementary school.  I vividly remember sitting on the front steps of my house practicing writing the alphabet in both lowercase and uppercase letters.  I must have been in first or second grade.  There was a thrill in copying what my teacher had written in my black-and-white composition book.  The excitement of shaping the letters just as she did is something that has stayed with me, though I can’t explain why.  The memory, however, remains crystal clear.  This is the experience I want to create for the students at the Shaw-Jones House.  I want our students to learn with joy, to feel excitement about the process, and to see learning not as a chore, but as an adventure–one that they cherish and remember for years to come.
